Sinter is a material made by fusing fine particles into a solid mass without melting them to the point of liquefaction. In the context of steel production, sintering is a crucial step in processing iron ore before it enters the blast furnace. Fine iron ore particles are mixed with other materials like coke, limestone, and recycled steel mill dust. The mixture is then heated to a high temperature on a sintering machine, creating larger masses of sinter which are then put into a blast furnace to continue the steel production process. Sintering reduces waste by recycling iron-bearing materials, that would otherwise be discarded, making the process of steelmaking more efficient and enhancing the sustainability of steel as a material.
